Law is the guarantee of peace, the measure of justice, and the common code of conduct for a society. However, the mere existence of law is not enough; the law must be aware of the community’s reality, be clearly understood, and be trusted by the citizens. The Wolaita Zone Justice Department’s work process of law formulation, popularization, and awareness creation works diligently to ensure that legal procedures prevail in our zone and that citizens can distinguish their rights and duties.
Our work process serves as a source of information and a guiding beacon of light within the justice system, carrying out the following key functions:
- Law formulation and revision: We work professionally to draft and revise regulations and directives issued by the zone administration so that they do not contradict the country’s Constitution and federal laws, are clear, and uphold the public interest.
- Legal education: Law should not be a secret known only to a few. Therefore, we provide legal education through various forums to women, youth, students, workers, and all residents of the zone to develop their legal consciousness.
- Dissemination of laws: We strive to ensure that the principle “ignorance of the law does not excuse from penalty” is based on knowledge by disseminating newly issued proclamations, regulations, and directives to the public in writing, via radio, and through digital options.
The Benefit of Technology and the Website
This new website, wolaitajustice.gov.et, is a new capability for our law popularization work. Through this platform:
- Citizens can easily access and read new and existing laws, directives, and training documents from their homes.
- It serves as a fast tool to promptly deliver new legal reforms in our country and zone to the public.
- It facilitates digital communication where the public can ask questions about the interpretation of laws and receive answers.
A citizen who knows their rights protects themselves from harm; a citizen who knows their duties stands up for the respect of others’ rights. Therefore, I call upon every resident of our zone to actively follow our website and utilize the legal awareness forums that our directorate will organize to increase their knowledge of the law.
